Passive/aggressive attitude

We had a basement flood caused by a blocked drain in our walkout. Cooperators sent their contracted investigator out. He assured us the damage would be covered. Talked to someone near Ottawa who denied our claim and became rude and argumentative when I questioned him on his decision. Extremely poor customer service. It took him almost 4 days to deny our claim. If I hadn’t done the tear out of all my carpet, under padding, trim and 1 ft of drywall myself it would have sat their collecting mould for those 4 days. After being denied I found out it still counts as a claim because I notified them and they sent out an investigator to do a report. So frustrating. Cooperators is awful.
I was away for four months and I had the impression that my home insurance was to be renewed in February, but I was wrong. I got this renewal letter that threatens to contact my bank (where I had my mortgage)!!! WTF????
Anyhow, I went to the Cooperators' new office at Station Square (Burnaby) and this Asian guy couldn't speak English. I was supposed to guess what he was saying! I am Chinese, but I expect the insurance person to be proficient in English, somewhat.
Then the guy said in broken English, asking for my banking info. I refused to give it, as I would use my credit card to pay for the insurance charge. He said he couldn't proceed with the application - I WALKED AWAY.
Well, after I did my errands, I got home and looked around for another insurance company. Square One has a good reputation - in comparison to reviews for RBC, Canadian Direct AND Cooperators.
And the online home insurance application was so much easier!!! It asks for relevant insurance questions and provides me with the various option - for all relevant coverages.
Also, for what I had covered with Cooperators, Square One charges me at least $100 cheaper!
Perhaps I should thank the annoying, rude, slow speaking Asian guy at Cooperators - so I could get on with Square One.
Very bad experience. Been a loyal customer for more than 10 years. Without getting correct information they just increase the rates on assumptions about additional drivers. It always depends whom you reach over the phone, some brokers are extremely good and some nasty and very rude. I cancelled my policy with them and went with a one with better service and understanding. They don't have a system to make complaints.
After being a loyal Co-Operators customer for 29 years with ZERO claims on my automobiles, our home and our cottage, I had the misfortune of some rainwater entering a window and damaging the walls, etc.
When I called to make a claim, I was sent from person to person, with the end person on holidays! It took nearly 4 days to make a claim and then I had to email pictures of the damage. Within 5 minutes I had an email back indicating they were not covering the damage. WOW! I always felt I was covered for everything, at least that is what my agent said....They never came to inspect the home and following nearly $8000 per year in premiums this is the level of service and loyalty I should expect? Be very careful of this company, their commitment to customers is poor and you will be left leaving their office with false hopes and they will stick it to you when you need them.
After being assured by the agent that I was covered for everything and being sucked in to that warm fuzzy feeling, I found Co-Operators to be full of it. I insure everything I own with Co-Operators and have never had a claim. I pay them over $14,000 a year in premiums.( I own a lot of stuff.)
I had about an inch of water in my basement when some of my neighbours had 6 feet. It came in through a window well. Minimal damage but I thought I would use this a a test for them. No one from Co-Operators ever even came to my house when I got a letter saying I was denied the claim because the damage was caused by rain water. Co-operators is history with me now. Don't believe anything they say about multiple lines of insurance will get you better treatment. Remember NO insurance company is your friend. You have to play hardball with them
We were customers of Co-operators for over 10 yrs. Recently, we cancelled our home and auto insurance with them. Even though they sent an email that they cancelled the policy, they kept on automatic deduction from our account. When we try to deal with it, the people there were very rude and would not admit that they have made a mistake. The Insurance Agent hung up the call when I tried to explain the error. They are nasty and just a bunch of thieves. Please think twice before dealing with the CO-OPERATORS. Don't waste your hard-earned money.
Scarborough Cooperators - worst experience with a company ever. The original broker was a lovely man. The new broker took over, who does not return calls and ignores clients even when issues are urgent. He does not have any idea what policies I held with his office and actually told me I didn’t have any when there are 2 life insurance policies, medical insurance and a home owner’s policy in addition to there being a renter’s policy - at least there was supposed to be one. He actually cancelled my renter’s insurance without any notification and I didn’t find out until 10 months later when I contacted him about a claim. This despite the fact that his office was also covering a vacant home insurance policy and they had been in communication with me more than a dozen times about it and were aware the house was still undergoing repairs/renovations. Initially, he said he would take care of the problem as I had never cancelled the policy myself - but then he never responded and would not return phone calls. Absolutely horrible experience during a very stressful time. Do not go with this broker.
This branch of Co-operators is horrible. They do not return phone calls - even when urgent (despite the fact that their answering machines say they will get back to you by the end of the business day) - they do not communicate effectively. In fact, they did not answer when they were expecting my call until I blocked my number! When I did call, they said my agent was not in that day and yet I could hear his voice in the background!!! They cancel policies without warning (they claim to have sent a registered letter but when I asked them to show that it had been delivered they could not). Just to put this review into perspective, I decided to go with Co-operators because my sister-in-law's father was the president of the company at the time, so I was a loyal customer for over 20 years. I was absolutely shocked at the way I was treated/ignored. I am a professional in an advanced area that understands customer service. The lack of compassion and empathy displayed by everyone at this office was disgusting!
Canadians pay, on average, approximately $20 per month in tenants insurance. Do you rent or plan to rent a property and want to reduce insurance costs? We will help you get a cheap tenant insurance quote today.
30 plus years with the company. Had a few bumps in the road. Last 3 years have been amazing at the Whitby ON agency. The agent who took over has provided us with the most amazing service year after year. Always calls back when he says he will. Thoroughly explains everything about our policy renewals, even how the increases were calculated. I honestly know more about insurance since he became our agent. I can’t speak for all the other locations but if you’re in Ontario, you want Chazz Okparanta to be your agent. This young man is the best they got.

I am going through a claim for damages incurred in a rental property. This is the first claim ever after 15+ years of having all my insurance needs done through Cooperators. I am sorry to say that this has been a very poor experience, with an aggressive adjuster making every bit difficult for me. Having been caught to enforce an eviction notice, Cooperators has added to my anxiety and difficulty of dealing with this situation. I will be switching my cars, home and rental properties away from them even if I have to pay more at my renewal.
