When it’s time to make a claim

by Blueice999uk on Sep 1, 2022

My wife was making a claim on her deceased father and she was one of the beneficiaries of three sisters. Communication with Manulife is bad. It does not matter if you get the agency to communicate with Manulife or do it yourself, they put you through to the call center that has limited training and when asking for a manager or supervisor level for Manulife they will not pass you on to them.

Try to change my policy address and bank account to my US address and customer service doesn't know how to enter a US address. Kept me 70 min on the phone and then tells me there is a system problem.
Cannot understand a US postal code format.
Still on the phone

Confused

My boyfriend recently passed away and he had life insurance through Manulife. I contacted them about his passing and the plant that he used to work at. The first time I called they couldn't find his policy so I need to call his old workplace to get the policy number. I called them back and the women I spoke to ended up not being able to find it she put me to another department and took them 2 minutes to find the policy. They told me that I would have to get papers filled out by the company he had worked for and then there were parts I would have to fill out. So I called his old employer back and told them they said that they found his paperwork for the insurance and that I wasn't the beneficiary and that she would contact them to see if he had changed it. So the insurance got back to her and told her there was no active policy at the time of his death which doesn't make sense because he was getting disability payment through them so he would have to have an active policy and why would the women I spoke to before tell me to get the papers filled out and send them in if the policy wasn't active. So I don't know if I should call them again to see if I can get a straight answer out of them or not. Seem like they don't know what there doing.

CROOKS!

by Dani on Oct 26, 2020

I have had to deal with Manulife for years as they are the provider for my employer's group benefits. I've had the same employer for about 7 years, so I've had multiple interactions with Manulife. They are ALWAYS hard to deal with, representatives are incompetent, and after the experience I just had I am absolutely convinced they are crooks who are likely scamming thousands of people out of money they are entitled to. Through my work benefits, I am covered 100% up to $3000 for Mental Health Services (in my case, I was submitting a claim for a marriage clinical counselling session which as per the fine print in my coverage statement falls under an eligible practitioner). Get this... a 50-minute session at the clinic I attend is $130. That is a set flat rate and does not change depending on how many people attend. So if I do a session on my own - $130 - if I do a session with my husband - also $130. True to form, Manulife only reimbursed me half of the cost of the appointment because my husband isn't covered under my plan. This should not matter! If a marriage counselling session was say $200 instead of the normal $130 I would completely understand why Manulife wouldn't cover the additional cost for someone who isn't covered under the plan...BUT THERE IS LITERALLY NOT ONE PENNY MORE COMING OUT OF MANULIFE'S BUDGET TO PAY ME OUT!!!! It's gut-wrenching that amidst global crisis all I'm trying to do is seek mental health services and a company that nets billions of dollars each year is trying to scam me out of $65 because "that is just how it's processed". I sincerely hope someone starts investigating this company because they are horrible.

AVOID AT ALL COST IF POSSIBLE

Got the MANULIFE TERM Policy from a 3rd party servicing agent who could care nonetheless.
Approached Manulife directly via EMAILS and CALLS. Their follow-up is almost non-existent too.
My policy was lapsed due to oversight in payment. When I reinstate, the underwriter put in an exclusion which was of no relation to my health. Thankfully, another agent over sharp and pointed out that the exclusion should not be in the counter-offer.
Turns out it was the TYPO ERROR of by “policy service team while generating Counteroffer Letter”. Can you imagine if the client is not careful in reading the terms and signed away something which should not be included?
The servicing agents are non-existent, hard to find, customer service takes forever to follow up. The email correspondence department is not speaking to the PHONE call department, so when I Called Manulife, the CSO doesn't know anything that has been communicated at the email side...
RIDICULOUS.

Terrible service

by Dissatisfied customer on Jul 27, 2024

I own a whole life policy which pays dividends. I have asked in the past about the investment component - financials or a prospectus - to understand the investment component. I was told this info could not be provided. My policy (for 32 years) & I cannot be given this information. All my other investments I can receive either of the above so I understand my investment but not here.
Recently I asked the service line about cashing my policy for the CSV. I was told I would receive a tax gain notice for over 90% of the CSV once cashed. I assumed I would pay tax on 50% of the gain but this could not be confirmed. I was surprised as I expected a small portion to be taxable, so I asked why this high. Death benefits are not taxable, so I was questioning why this amount. I was told this was the figure that appeared on the computer & the tax department could only answer, or I could contact my accountant. I was not paying my accountant. I asked to speak to the tax department, as the representative obviously could not answer any questions. I was told to write my questions and the rep would ask the tax department & reply in 7-10 days. I asked what if I have a follow-up question & again it would be 7-10 days. I again asked to speak to the tax department but was told I could not nor would anyone call me back.
This has been the pattern for 32 years. They will not give out info & the service is terrible. My original agent is long retired so that avenue is closed.
My strong advice is never buy a whole life insurance policy from Manulife. I was in the financial services industry for over 40 years, and no other FI would treat their customers this way.

Poor treatment, cheap service

Called before ordering an orthotics to ensure it would be covered. They said yes. I ordered the piece, which was 600 and it was never reimbursed.
I've called twice, they just give excuses, saying they will call back and never did so.
Cheap company with untrained people.
Highly suggest the company start investing in training so they can have people with correct information answering our questions.
Such a waste of time.

The app is bad, the web portal is bad, customer support can't help over the phone, even their online agent is bad. This company is completely useless in every way.

Did you know there is a 35% chance of developing a critical illness before you are 65 and 65%-70% chance before you turn 81? That means getting a critical illness insurance quote is no less important than getting life insurance. Your choice.

Dishonest scammers

My wife and I are first time home buyers and were referred to manulife by our mortgage broker. I spoke to a representative on the phone, who outlined their options, which were quite expensive. I asked that the quotes be emailed to me and that I need to speak with my wife.

We wake up this morning to a series of confirmation emails stating that both of us have enrolled in the program for almost $600 per month. Absolutely outrageous. We phoned in and canceled immediately but I'm not 100% confident that they will actually do it. Simply shameful, and they have lost any potential business from us for sure!
