Stopped insuring floods

by tbk2 on Jul 24, 2012
3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall I am pleased with the services of RBC Insurance however there was a flood in our building and immediately after they stopped insuring floods and damages related to water damage. I found that unreliable and changeable.

Bad experience on my claim

by EF, Miss, Ontario on Sep 12, 2014
3 out of 5 stars

I had a bad experience putting my first claim. The contractor they sent to check out our claim didn't even spend half hour to look at the damage to our house and had already evaluated that claim was denied.
An overall experience for me is not positive. I am on my half way of my policy till renewal and I am looking to switch company. I don't care if I have to penalized for an early cancellation. I just want out.

HomeProtector will do harm

by Betteroffdead on Oct 12, 2016
1 out of 5 stars

0 Star rating.

When I purchased my home I was required by RBC to have HomeProtector Insurance in the event of illness or death it would guarantee the payments would be covered. This was to protect the bank and me from any perils arising from injury or death.

Many years later I was involved in a very bad accident which left me disabled for a 6 year period of recovery. RBC HomeProtector began making mortgage payments after 60 days of proof of claim.

Every 3 or 4 months the payments just stop, pending a review of a doctors report. Every single missed payment event was recorded as if I missed the payments. Eventually the insurance would retro-pay any missed payments but the recorded missed payments just added up and up.

When contacting RBC, they would always blame the insurance underwriter for the problem and when contacting the underwriter, they would blame RBC. I still continued to receive the impact of the missed payments on my credit report.

Each and every doctors report clearly noted this was a "Chronic" condition, meaning Forever... Claim review is supposed to have people who specialize in clarifying doctors correspondence yet they clearly don't understand what "Chronic" means.

At one point a weekly motrgage payment had been missed for over 5 months straight! Pending doctors report under review. RBC handed the file over to Gowlings legal while a claim was still active and ongoing.

Insurance finally payed some arrears less 2 months within a day, while Gowlings were coming after my home. I had to make regular payments to Gowlings while trying to go back to work before my doctor allowed me to.

This was a horrible situation! I am an engineer and had to be professional at all times while dealing with excruciating pain, vomiting, and also taking very high doses of Fentanyl and oxycocet for breakthrough pain.

I have made every possible effort to return to work and been completely honest to report my work activity to RBC insurance. I have paid every cent to Gowlings and RBC while my mortgage was in limbo.

There was complete incompetence by RBC collections management, RBC Insurance representatives, Underwriters review personnel.

So what was I buying for many years paying premiums. They did much more harm than good. They put me in peril directly. Now my credit report looks like dart board, but I was protected. Did I neglect to mention my mortgage payment weekly was less than 200 bucks?

We shall see what a provincial court judge thinks of this predatory way of doing business.

Refused I moved 2 many times?

by Customer gone on Dec 5, 2015

After 1 1/2 hours the guy came back on and told me I moved too many times in the last 5 years. He said it looked like I was flipping houses and RBC does not support that. I separated and bought a house. I moved to my home town and rented while I built a house. I am not longer working so I moved into an existing less expensive house. I was a customer for over 15years. Also a comment was made because I had a secure line of credit instead of mortgage. Really at my age ... so I have a small amount left and that plays against me!!!

RBC Robs!

by long term RBC customers on Oct 22, 2015

RBC is terrible, they got agents pretend to be friendly but all they do is up sale the heck out of you. I had a gut feeling that they cheat and lie to get your pay them first and does't really cover anything. Later on it proves me right, I had a sewage backup and they denied the coverage with all kinds of excuses. And when I decided to cancel my vehicle insurance with them they immediately jacked up my current home insurance by 20% to deter you from leaving them.

Horrible Service

I just had a recent claim from RBC because of the water damage coming from my roof, The emergency people from Strone did a pretty good job cleaning the damage but never got a containment temporary fix, but the Adjuster who handles my claim was so horrible service, first of all it her at least 2 weeks that the damage was not covered due to my roof has deteriorated, mind you my roof is only 14 years, no temporary fix has been done during the wait time. Secondly I took a second opinion from another roofer and they saw 3 missing shingles, I sent her the photos just to confirm if that is enough to be covered by the insurance, sent her (Jafri N.) several emails and left her several voicemail and never got a reply back, CUSTOMER SERVICE IS SO HORRIBLE, ITS TIME TO SHOP AROUND WITH ANOTHER INSURANCE PROVIDER

Wont insure

They wouldn't insure us due to the garage having heat. They where alarmed when i said we weren't only going to store cars in the garage. So if you use a garage for anything, i mean anything other than storing a car, don't even bother asking them, waste of an hour of my life i won't ever get back.

To many "policies"

I was talking to RBC insurnace for a home quote. The representative was very nice however I must say this is strike two for RBC insurance. My first encounter with RBC insurance was when I moved to Calgary and called about tenant insurance. I called the day after I moved into my condo and was told because I had moved in, they could not offer tenant insurance. Forward to now when I purchased my home, I called for a quote and was told because I am building a garage on my property, they could not offer me insurance. Any structure on your property being built requiring a permit will make it so you can not obtain insurnace from RBC. If it's this hard to obtain insurance through RBC I can only imagine how difficult it is to obtain a claim through RBC. Stay very far away from RBC.

horrible service

I moved several months ago and had the exact same amount of tenants insurance in my new place. I got a quote over the phone for the same price (within a dollar). then received that quote by mail. A week later, RBC sent me 3 written quotes for 100%, 50%, and 70% higher even though my insurance hadn't changed at all. They randomly went into my bank account and took out the higher rates several times in a one month period. I know that mistakes happen so I called expecting RBC to acknowledge going into my bank account illegally, refund my money and accept their first quote as the correct one. It took many months to clear things up, they were completely rude and unapologetic, never called back when they said they would and awful to deal with even though all of the mistakes were made from their staff and of course to their benefit. Had I not kept the copy of the original quote , called and wrote to the Ombudsman many times , and kept on it, RBC would have never refunded me the money they illegally took. Horrible service. Never deal with them.

Never again

I switched to RBC a few years back thinking to save money (at the time I was saving $1,000 per year) but what a mistake... 1-st issue: I had water in my basement, they looked into it and determined it was not covered - I had to pay $25k to fix at my own expense. 2-nd issue: I made a modification to the house and wanted to update my info so I called them and after having wait over 30 min (to talk to their risk manager) she mentioned they are cancelling my policy! Based on the fact that an egress window was not big enough. After arguing that it met the code requirement, she changed her reason to you have a month to month renter in your house. I told her they are willing to sign for 1 year. Then she changed her reason to we actually don't want to insure the house!!! What?! 3-rd issue: She offered me to cancel on my own accord and save the bad record of having an insurance cancel my policy so I did but she needed my wife's consent (joint ownership) so I asked her to wait 10-15 min before calling my wife as I wanted to explain her the situation. Well, immediately after the phone call she phoned my wife, I could not even get through, she was faster than me with speed dial! Will I ever be a customer of RBC insurance? NEVER!
