After Changing Policy

When I called Belair to get a quote, the lady I spoke to was fantastic and very friendly. Unfortunately that is where the great customer service experience ended. 3 months after switching, I get an email saying they want to do a home inspection. No reason given and no person to contact. I sent back an email inquiring as to why and the response was they review all policies and because we have a high efficiency wood insert in the fireplace our house is considered a high risk. It took several emails to get this answer from them. At no time when I initially switched to Belair was this ever mentioned as being an issue.
They are also very sneaky in how they word the email, it is worded as if they are doing you a favor because you do not have to pay for the inspection.
So I understand the part about wanting to check the fireplace, however they said they wanted to do a full home inspection. The person who did the inspection checked the house over so thoroughly to the point where i felt they were trying desperately to find something wrong with the house. This week I received an email saying that they want me to replace two light switch covers and the fireplace hearth is not big enough. The house was built in 1979 and met code then. Belair is expecting me to tear apart the hearth and expand it because it is short by 1-1/2 ".
Be very careful with this company, they are very invasive with your privacy and do not come clean when you challenge them.
If i had known this before I would never have never switched to them.

appalling experience

I made a claim following a fire in my apartment building while I was on vacation. My belongings had to be stored while the repairs were taking place. Months of back and forth and phone messages and in the end, Belair doesn't like the contractor the house owner found and doesn't want to pay and say it's basically my problem. Now my belongings are with the contractor who refuses to deliver them before they get paid and Belair refuses to pay. So although nothing got damaged in the fire, I've lost all my belongings thanks to this insurer (bar paying 10k$ out of my own pocket to the contractor). Not sure why I payed for an insurance policy.

Terrible experience

I will I could give them a less than 1 star. Their auto people are great, but I think that is because of the stiff competition. Their home insurance people are the worst. Don't buy. Hidden fees and inspections required. would not recommend to my enemy. They can put a black mark on your history that will effect your next purchase

Are you a condo unit tenant? Remember that neither your condominium corporations' policy nor your landlord's insurance policy protects you as a tenant (3rd part liability, contents, etc.). If you do not have your own insurance policy, get your condominium insurance quote today.

Bad attitude

We had Belair home insurance for a couple of years. Then I noticed that from one month to another the automatic monthly withdrawal went up by more than $50.
I contacted them to find out why, and they told me that it was the renewal of the policy, and that they had sent all the paperwork advising me of the terms and conditions well in advance. At this point the tone is very severe.
When I pointed out that no such document had arrived to me, she ask me whether I was sure and not have missed it, with a tone insinuating that I was lying and that she knew it. After repeating several times that I had not seen such papers, that I check my mail religiously, and that I had never agreed to such increase, she agrees to check when/where the paperwork was sent. Comes back after a couple of minutes and states triumphantly how the paperwork was sent about 6 weeks prior, I say I have not seen such thing. Then she reads out the address, and I pointed out that I did not live at that address. I said that it did not matter anyways, I wanted to cancel this policy that I had never agreed to in first place, due to how I had been treated.
She became obviously angry and said that I still faced a more than $300 cancellation fee. I told her that it was impossible to have me bound to something I never accepted, that they had made the mistake. She insisted, and tired of being bullied on the phone for so long, I told her that I did not care anymore, I was cancelling it, fee or no fee, and that if there was a fee I would easily recuperate it in a few months with the lower offer from the competitor.

There were no more withdrawals, and I never got the fee in the end.

I have friends that say they are very happy with them. I was happy till this incident (but really, you're always happy while you are paying them and have no claims/issues). They have lost me as a customer forevermore, every year when I shop around I avoid them, because if they disputed something so silly as sending something to the wrong address, how will they be if I have a claim?. I got a quote from Intact and after finding out that they are related to Belair I automatically discarded it (it was not great anyways).

Belair all about money

I had been with Belair for over 20 years. My daughter bought her first house, and it is a fixer upper. Explained in detail to Belair about the fixing up and schedule, and they insured the home. Two months after moving in, my daughter received a call stating she was being cancelled in 48 hours. Someone had driven by and seen a wood burning stove chimney and a bad roof. The stove had been removed the day she moved in as the insurance representative had been told, and the roofer was scheduled to start the following week. If the winter had been shorter, the roof would have been done. Belair refused to accept any of this, and my daughter ended up having to find a new insurance company within a day. Because of the roof, she had to get high risk insurance, which was LESS EXPENSIVE than Belair. I have since cancelled my Belair insurance, and would never recommend them to anyone. Hard to believe that high risk insurance is less expensive than a Belair rate for a family that had been a customer for so many decades. Do NOT choose Belair. They will not be there when you need them.

STAY AWAY!!!

Good Day,
I have rated Belairdirect 1star because there is no lower score on here.
My parents have been customer's of Belairdirect for 40 Years.
YES, 40 years, and the only claimes they have made were about 4.
My mother being the only person in the present house that is insured with Belairdirect is now 80 years of age.
My sister was looking to see why the yearly fees were getting more and more expensive. This year we started to investigate. In the mean time the insurance was due. By the time we got to see that the insurance was past-due, we sent them a check. Not too long after that we got a letter saying that they we were late in paying and cancelled the insurance, returning the check.
The yearly cost to insure a duplex with 4 claimes in 40 years was up to $3000.00! ! !
Can I simply say that you should ALL stay away from Belairdirect!
All they want is your money, and when you ask for a claim you will pay 5 times more after than.

Stay away....
